Accident Insurance (Unfallversicherung) and occupational disablement insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung)

The possibility of becoming incapable of working and, consequently, incapable of earning a living is widely underestimated and typically results in severe financial losses. The purpose of the occupational disablement insurance is to cover or at least to limit these financial losses through a pension payment for the affected person. The annual contribution heavily depends on the gender and the age of the person to be insured and on the insurance provider. By rule of thumb, it is generally 1.5 times the age of the person to be insured.

For foreign students or scientists visiting Göttingen for a short time only, the occupational disablement insurance does not make that much sense. In such cases, an accident insurance might be more practical. The purpose of the accident insurance is to provide a pension and/or a capital payment in case of accidental disablement. Again, the annual contribution heavily depends on the insurance provider and varies from 0.5 to 2.0 Euros per 1.000 Euros to be insured.

A statutory accident insurance covers students matriculated in and scientists employed at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in case of accidents which occur at the university or between home and the university ('Wegeversicherung').
